Heavy rainfall caused nagging gridlock, as traffic movement came to an almost standstill across the busy capital on Tuesday.

As a result, the commuters had to wait for hours on the jam-packed streets for reaching their respective destinations on the day - when the capital witnessed 48 millilitres (mm) of rainfall.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), 44-88 mm of rain is categorised as heavy.

Besides, road repairing along with construction works of the metro-rail and Dhaka Elevated Expressway projects added to the commuters' sufferings.

Office-goers said following introduction of the new office schedule, the level of traffic congestion has become intense, as most offices and schools start at the same time in the morning.

To avoid getting stuck in the transports, many commuters got down from the buses and started moving towards their respective destinations on foot on Tuesday.

Traffic officials also passed a busy time because of the traffic congestion throughout the day.

When asked about the situation, a traffic sergeant in Malibag area said inclement weather caused heavy gridlock in the city.

"We're trying hard to keep the wheels of the transports moving, but there is huge pressure of vehicles," he added.

The highest rainfall of 142 mm was recorded in Bogura, followed by Ishwardi (130 mm), Tarash (112 mm), Badalgachhi (105 mm), and Tangail (98 mm), according to the BMD.

Meteorologist Md. Shaheenul Islam said the well-marked low over South Madhya Pradesh and the adjoining areas of India moved further west-north-westwards and took position over central part of Madhya Pradesh and the adjoining areas.

It is likely to move west-north-westwards and weaken gradually. Under its influence, deep convection is taking place over the North Bay and the adjoining areas. The axis of monsoon trough runs through Bangladesh, he added.

The BMD forecasted that light to moderate rain/thunder showers, accompanied by temporary gusty/squally wind and lightning flashes, is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.
