CHITTAGONG, June 22: The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Sunday announced Tk 11.96 billion annual budget for the upcoming fiscal year (FY), 2014-15, without keeping any fund for tackling water-logging, which has been the most acute problem for the city dwellers for decades.
Of the total budget, over Tk 5.67 billion has been targeted from the own fund of CCC, while over TK 6.28 billion would be available from different development grants.
While placing the budget CCC Mayor Manjur Alam said the major schemes
undertaken for the upcoming FY are - implementation of the 1995 Drainage Master Plan, construction of bus-truck terminal, setting up garment village at Kalurghat industrial area, tourism development at Patenga and Thandachari, and construction of schools with cyclone shelters.
The projects sent for approval under annual development programme (ADP) are Tk 2.95 billion new canal digging, Tk 2.00 billion asphalt plant for road carpeting, and Tk 830 million Patenga Bay Resort tourism facility.
The mayor also announced over Tk 4.98 billion revised budget for the FY 2013-14.
The mayor in his budget speech said no new tax has been imposed in the budget and it is a development-oriented one, aiming at providing better civic amenities to the city dwellers.
He said the proposed budget has attached special emphasis on infrastructure development, education and health sectors and removal of water-logging.
He announced that CCC has taken up a massive digging plan of Chaktai Khal at a cost of Tk 2.95 billion for digging a three-kilometre-long canal and building sluice gates in order to remove water-logging in the city. The BNP-backed mayor said the proposed budget is nearly practical, but not ambitious.
