CHITTAGONG, June 28: The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CMCCI) have started selling different items at subsidised rates to the poor people in the city.
CCCI President Mahbubul Alam formally inaugurated their sale of the items at a function in front of the Chittagong Chamber Building at Agrabad Saturday morning. CCCI senior vice president Nurun Newaz Selim, vice president Syed Jamal Ahmed, directors Mahfuzul Hoque Shah, Syed Sagir Ahmed, Zahirul Islam Alamgir, Ohid Siraj Swapan and Md Jahangir and other senior executives were present on the occasion.
Under the programme, the CCCI will be selling 'atap' or non-boiled rice and boiled rice at Tk 25 per kg and sugar at Tk 37.50 per kg from 11.30 am to 2.00 pm everyday until Ramadan 27.
Mr Mahbubul Alam said the CCCI was arranging the sale of rice and sugar at subsidised rates every year during the period from Ramadan 1 to Ramadan 27 to ameliorate sufferings of the poor during the holy month and the programme.
He called upon the well-off citizens and businessmen of the port city to come forward with their helping hands so that the poor could enjoy the month-long fasting and Eid-ul-Fitr.
The CMCCI has also arranged sale of rice, sugar and soybean oil at subsidized rates as they did in the past few years.
Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain MP formally inaugurated the sale in front of the CMCCI office at Agrabad in the city Saturday evening. President of the CMCCI Khalilur Rahman and vice president AM Mahbub Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.
CMCCI secretary Salimullah Chowdhury said the CMCCI would also be selling those items at subsidised rates in front of the head office of the KDS Group of Industries at the Nasirabad Industrial Area. Sales at both the spots will start Monday and continue until Ramadan 29.
Each person will get 5 kg rice at Tk 25 per kg, 2 kg sugar at Tk 75 per packet and 2-litre bottled soybean oil at Tk 210 each.
