CHITTAGONG, June 4: The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) has hailed the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, 2015-16, as pro-people and business-friendly.
The trade-body hoped that the budget would make a far-reaching contribution to lessening the existing gap between the poor and the rich.
CCCI vice president Syed Jamal Ahmed in his instant and primary observation said greater coordination among the agencies concerned, capacity enhancement in implementing the projects under seventh five-year plan, and successful completion of the projects under PPP (public-private partnership) initiative would take Bangladesh towards emerging as a developed country by 2041.
The CCCI leader has emphasized identifying new areas of tax and enhancing tax domain without bothering the taxpayers.
He opined that in the budget proposal tax-free ceiling for individual taxpayers has been raised to Tk 2,50,000, for women and people above 65 years to Tk 3,00,000, and for handicapped people Tk 3,75,000, which is good.
"If the rate of inflation remains static, these limits will not create pressure on common people," he said in a statement released after the proposed budget.
For imposition of surcharge the wealth limit should be Tk 30 million instead of the proposed amount of Tk 27.5 million, he said.
Besides, imposition of import duty at the proposed rates of 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 per cent instead of the previous rates of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 per cent is illogical and deserves logical evaluation, he also said.
The VAT exemption limit proposed in the budget at Tk 3.0 million should be raised to Tk 3.5 million, he added.
