Central bank Governor resigns

Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder resigned on Friday afternoon on "personal grounds" .

The central bank governor submitted his resignation to the Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Ministry of Finance at around 3:00 pm citing personal reasons.

FID secretary Md Abdur Rahman has confirmed it to the Financial Express. "He sent the resignation through WhatsApp to me".

The FID secretary said that they would now send the resignation letter to the Chief Adviser for completing the next procedures.

Governor Abdur Rauf Talukder had not been going to office since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on Monday last.

Even he is not at his residence since then, the Governor's House in the city.

As per rules, the Governor is appointed by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance with the consent of the Prime Minister or the Chief Adviser.

On June 11, 2022, Abdur Rauf Talukder was appointed as the governor for a four-year term.

But he joined on July 12, 2022. Before joining as Governor, he was the Senior Secretary of the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance.

Before the country's political transformation, the governor came under widespread criticism for banning journalists from entering Bangladesh Bank.

Besides, there are many allegations against him like favouring some business groups resulting in higher volume of non-performing loans in the banking sector.
