FE Report
A devastating fire in a chemical warehouse once again claimed seven valuable lives and injured several others at Jatrabari in the capital Wednesday, the police and firefighters said.
Firefighters said the blaze originated at the chemical warehouse which was used in making shoe named Baby Solution Traders at 319 South Jatrabari at about 5:00pm and soon engulfed the whole warehouse.
"We've recovered seven bodies from inside the burnt chemical warehouse and rescued several people injured in the fire," Fire Service Deputy Director Abdur Rashid told the FE, adding most of the deceased were employees of the inflammable chemical warehouse.
He said most of the people died due to suffocation and extreme heat as the fire was fuelled by chemicals. He suggested immediate shifting of such warehouses from residential areas to avert casualties.
"The temperature of the fire and fumes become unbearable because of the deadly chemicals," Sub-Inspector of Jatrabari police station Shahin Uddin said.
Firemen from several fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the blaze at about 6:00pm after frantic efforts with the help of the police and local people.
The capital of nearly 15 million people had witnessed the deadliest fire in its history on June 3 at the densely populated Nimtoli area. At least 120 people were killed and hundred others injured in the incident.
A chemical warehouse in the area was responsible for the massive casualties, forcing authorities to order removal of such godowns from residential areas.
But owners of most of the chemical warehouse did not shift their godowns even after the second deadline set by the government that ended on September 30.
