A huge quantity of clothes worth about Tk 50 million (5 crore) burnt to ashes as a garment factory went up in flames in the city's Shanirakhra area Monday afternoon, reports UNB.
Fire Brigade sources said the fire originated from the top floor of the six-storied building housing Reach Fashion Ltd at Gobindaur under Jatrabari thana at about 1:45 pm, gutting all its readymade garments.
Most of the factory workers were engaged in having lunch when the blaze broke out, said the sources. They could not find any plausible cause, as there was a power outage at the time.
A convoy of 10 vehicles of firefighters from headquarters, Postogula and Demra stations rushed to the spot and doused the flames after two and half hours of frantic efforts with the help of locals.
"It is not confirmed wherefrom the blaze originated as there was no electricity during the fire," the Fire Brigade sources said.
Owner of the factory Mosharraf Hossain Dally told reporters that all the clothes, estimated worth about Tk 50 million (5 crore), which were kept in the factory's godown for delivery, were gutted in the devastating fire.
No one was reported injured in the fire as the workers were outside for lunch.
