Confusion over release of Khaleda deepens

August 12, 2008 00:00:00

Confusion over Khaleda release got confounded as two influential advisers clearly stated that the process was at the final stages while Home Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin, whose ministry is to notify her parole, again said Monday that he had no knowledge about the matter, reports UNB.

"Believe me, I don't know anything about it," he told reporters at his ministry as they wanted to know the latest developments about the former Prime Minister's release following Advisors Dr Hossain Zillur and Maj Gen (retd) Ghulam Quader's remarks.

Communications Adviser Quader Sunday told reporters that the process of Khaleda Zia's release was now at the last stage. He also said she would be set free without any precondition.

In reply to a question, Quader had further said Khaleda Zia herself would decide whether she would receive treatment at home or abroad and where she would be staying in Dhaka.

On Saturday, Commerce Advisor Dr Hossain Zillur categorically said that Khaleda Zia's release was at the final stage, adding that events will proceed faster after her release.

Advisors Zillur and Quader's indicative remarks triggered high speculations among people that she might be released anytime so soon.

Inquisitive journalists also thronged the home ministry and the law ministry to gather latest information about the matter. However, no concrete movement was seen in those ministries.

Meanwhile, ex-Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia stuck to her guns and eventually refused to become voter from prison as the deadline was over Monday, official sources said.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told reporters after a meeting with Khaleda Zia Monday that the immediate-past Prime Minister declined to register, saying that she won't be voter while detained in jail.

"I hope I will be freed from jail very soon, and after my release, I'll enroll myself as a voter," she was quoted as saying during the last-ditch effort by the authorities concerned to persuade her into getting registered on the voter roll.
