A Dhaka Court has ordered the attachment of some plots and lands, 22 flats, and two houses owned by former chairman of Padma Bank (formerly Farmers Bank) Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, his wife, and son.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain gave the order on Tuesday, responding to a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Both ACC and court sources confirmed the matter.
ACC sources said Sarafat owns 10 flats in Dhaka, including Gulshan, a 20-storey house in Gulshan-2, a 7.5-katha plot in Purbachal, and 25 kathas of land in Gazipur and Badda.
His wife Anjuman Ara Shahid owns five flats in Dhaka, a four-storey house on a 7.5-katha land in Bashundhara Residential Area, and 13 kathas of land in other areas.
Besides, his son Chowdhury Rahib Safwan Sarafat has seven flats in various parts of Dhaka in his name.
The ACC said the properties were acquired through corruption, abuse of power, and fraudulent activities, including misappropriation of bank funds.
In its petition, the anti-corruption watchdog said Sarafat embezzled nearly Tk 8.87 billion by exploiting his position and deceiving customers. Inquiries have revealed that his family acquired many immovable assets in various locations across the country through illicit means.
In a separate case, the court also ordered the freezing of two bank accounts belonging to former state minister for housing and public works Sharif Ahmed. These accounts reportedly hold around Tk 35 million.
The ACC is probing allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and embezzlement of public funds against the former state minister.
