Covid caseload crosses 0.39m

21 more die in 24 hours

With 1,637 new cases, the tally of Covid-19 confirmed cases crossed 0.39 million in the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Now, the overall number of infections reached 3,90,205 from 21,78,714 samples tested so far. Bangladesh stepped back by two positions to 17th in the global standing as far as infections are concerned.

Simultaneously, death toll continued to rise here, as 21 more patients succumbed due to the respiratory disease caused by the virus during the last 24 hours, the DGHS data showed

With the latest fatalities, the number of deaths reached 5,681 as of October 19, the official figure showed.

Because of the hike in deaths, the fatality rate rose to 1.46 per cent among the positive cases recorded so far in the densely-populated nation of around 165 million population.

Although the number of infections kept falling in recent weeks, the rate is still above the danger level, according to the healthcare professionals.

The vacancy in the Covid-dedicated hospitals also keeps widening gradually, as over 80 per cent of the hospital beds remained empty.

According to Monday's health bulletin on coronavirus, issued by the DGHS, a total of 15,146 samples were tested across the country since Sunday noon.

Of the tests, some 1,637 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 21 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, it mentioned.

With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 3,90,206 and 5,681 respectively.

Of the total deaths, 51.19 per cent was recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (20.03 per cent), Khulna (8.04 per cent), Rajshahi (6.42 per cent), Rangpur (4.52 per cent), Sylhet (4.22 per cent), Barishal (3.47 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.09 per cent).

At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 1,627 more patients recovered, taking the entire tally of recovery to 3,05,599, and recovery rate to 78.32 per cent.

Globally, over 40.3 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 11,19,305 have died until Monday 5:45 pm, according to Worldometer info.
