Covid infection uptrend persists

Mobile court soon to ensure wearing of masks in capital

With the detection of 2139 new Covid infections on Monday, the highest single-day cases in the past 38 days, the fear of a resurgence of the deadly pathogen only gained strength.

On September 7 last, a total of 2,202 Covid-19 cases were recorded in Bangladesh, the official figures revealed.

A total of 21 more people died during the last 24-hour reporting period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

A total of 15,768 samples were tested while some 16,218 samples were collected across the country during the last 24 hours until Monday morning.

The rate of infection has been rising steadily during the past few days.

The infection rate was recorded at 13.57 per cent on Monday while the rates were 13.7 per cent and 13.5 per cent on Sunday and Saturday respectively, according to a DGHS press release. The rate came down to around 11 per cent in the middle of last month.

The overall infection rate is recorded at 16.99 per cent in the country.

With the Monday's tally, the total fatalities from Covid-19 reached 6,215 since the virus was detected first in the country in early March this year.

However, the official rate of fatalities from the disease remained static at 1.43 per cent on Monday.

A total of 1,439 people recovered from the Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, the press release mentioned.

The rate of recovery from the disease was recorded at 80.82 per cent as of Monday, it added.

According to the official data, a total of 434,472 people have so far been infected with coronavirus in Bangladesh and 351,146 of them recovered.

A total of 2,556,962 samples have so far been tested in the country since March last, the DGHS data showed.

Meanwhile, according to a UNB report, the government Monday asked the administration to strengthen the mobile court operation and enforce laws to ensure the use of masks, also in the capital.

"We've already asked them [admin] to strengthen the mobile court operation or law enforcement further in different places of the capital. Hope, it'll start within the next two to three days," said Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam.

He was briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting on Monday.

The cabinet issued instructions to take a tougher stance to check the Covid-19 as its infection rate has started increasing slightly, he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the cabinet meeting, held at the Bangladesh Secretariat, from her official residence Ganobhaban virtually.
