Covid infections, fatalities waning

Downward trend in major indicators of Covid-19 pandemic continued in the country, as infections and deaths showed a sharp decline last week that ended on October 10.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of infections and fatalities fell by 1.90 per cent and 10.71 per cent respectively than that of the previous week which expired on October 03.
On the other hand, the number of recoveries and tests made slight increase of 0.04 per cent and 0.86 per cent respectively during the week.


In the 40th epidemiological week (from September 27 to October 03) since detection of the first coronavirus case on March 08, some 9,692 people tested positive among the 81,030 samples tested during the seven days.
In that week, some 11,292 people got cured from the deadly viral disease, while 196 embraced death.
During 41th epidemiological week (from October 04 to October 10), the number of infections and deaths came down to 9,508 and 175 respectively.
However, as high as 1,193 people tested Covid-19 positive, while 24 others died of the respiratory disease caused by the new virus in the last 24 hours until Sunday morning.
On Sunday's daily health bulletin on coronavirus, the DGHS said a total of 9,467 samples were tested across the country since Saturday morning.
Of the tests, some 1,193 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 24 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, it mentioned.
"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 3,78,266 and 5,524 respectively," noted the bulletin, signed by the DGHS additional director general (administration).
With the latest figures, the rates of infections and deaths now stand at 18.26 per cent and 1.46 per cent respectively.
Of the total deaths, 50.81 per cent was recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (22.15 per cent), Khulna (8.13 per cent), Rajshahi (6.50 per cent), Rangpur (4.54 per cent), Sylhet (4.27 per cent), Barishal (3.49 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.10 per cent).
At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 1,495 patients recovered, taking the entire tally of recovery to 2,92,860.
Globally, over 37.5 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 10,78,011 have died until Sunday 5:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
