The tally of Covid-19 new cases continues soaring as Bangladesh on Friday recorded the highest single-day spike in infections in almost five months.

In the last 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Friday, a total of 4,378 more people tested positive along with six deaths across the country, according to the Director General of Health Service (DGHS).

The latest daily caseload of 4378 was the highest since August 26, 2021 when 4698 people were infected.

With the latest detection of the new cases after testing 29,871 samples from 852 labs across the country, the daily test positivity rate jumped to 14.66 per cent from Thursday's 12.03 per cent.

In terms of area-wise infections in the past 24 hours, Dhaka district, including the metropolitan area, accounted for 3,607 of the fresh cases.

With the latest data, the entire tally of Coronavirus-related fatalities rose to 28,129 while the total caseload stood at 1,609042.

Among the six deaths, three were from the Dhaka division, two from Chattogram and one from Rajshahi division.

Of the total 28,129 fatalities, 12,291 occurred in Dhaka division, 5,702 in Chittagong, 2,067 in Rajshahi, 3,622 in Khulna, 950 in Barishal, 1,273 in Sylhet, 1,375 in Rangpur and 849 in Mymensingh divisions.

During the same period of time, health authorities also reported that 351 patients also recovered from Covid-19 across the country. It took the total number of recoveries to 1,552306.
