CHITTAGONG, Jan 29: Chittagong Port Authority magistracy reclaimed 298-decimal port land from the illegal grabbers in one year from January to December 2013.
The market value of the reclaimed port lands stands over Tk 200 million. The authorized officer and executive magistrate of the CPA Dr. Anupam Saha reclaimed the lands during 124 mobile courts conducted against illegal grabbers in the calendar year.
Besides, the authorized officer panelized Tk 57, 62,750 from 37 grabbers as fine in the cases under CPA Ordinance 1976, Inland Shipping Ordinance 1976 and Merchant Shipping Ordinance 19863, CPA acting secretary said.
During the mobile court the CPA magistrate issued punishment orders against 37 land grabbers who had been occupying Chittagong Port lands at different areas along the port channel.
CPA acting secretary Md Muhibul Hoque said a good number of influential persons and business people have been illegally grabbing the lands at Patenga, Sadarghat and Lal Diar Char for many years.
Scores of cases have been lodged against those people to recover the lands but it was impossible for the Port Authority to reclaim the lands from them. There was no alternative to reclaim the lands without conducting mobile courts, sources in the office of the secretary said.
Another source in the CPA requesting not to be named told the FE that a few senior officials in the estate department of the CPA had assisted the land grabbers in keeping land in their possession for decades.
