Five vying for mayor post, 106 for general ward councillors

Cumilla City Corporation (CCC) will go to election today (Wednesday).
Over 0.22 million voters (a total of 2,29,920) will exercise their voting right through electronic voting machines (EVM) in 105 centres from 8:00am, reports BSS.
Voting will be held through EVMs in all the centres.
A total of five candidates are vying for mayoral post while 106 for general ward councillors and 36 for reserved councillors seats.
Electoral equipment including electronic voting machines, have been sent to the polling centres from the Shaheed Abu Zahid Auditorium of Cumilla Zila School on Tuesday.
A total of 640 booths have been set up in 105 polling stations, Returning Officer of the CCC elections Md Shahedunnabi Chowdhury said on Wednesday.
The Election Commission has completed all preparations to hold a free, fair and peaceful election, he said. Necessary election equipment has been sent to each centre, he said adding "Voters will come to the polling centre without any hesitation."
"Each centre has adequate security measures including CCTV cameras. So, we hope to hold the election in a free, fair and peaceful manner with the cooperation of all," said the returning officer.
Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmed said that all necessary steps have been taken by the law enforcement agencies to strengthen the security during the elections.
"Checkpoints have been set up in at least 75 places in the city. There are 27 magistrates working in 27 wards and 3,608 members of the law enforcement agencies are working in the polling stations from today (Wednesday)," said the police official.
