Cyclone \\\'Komen\\\' hits Ctg coast

At least twelve people were killed and several others remained missing in the storm caused by the cyclone 'Komen', which was crossing the Chittagong coast  until our going to press at 10:00 pm Thursday.  
According to the control room of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the casualties were reported in Cox's Bazar, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur and Brahmanbaria districts.
It said four, including a four-year minor boy, were killed in various locations of Cox's Bazar and one each in Patuakhali and Bhola.  
Besides, three people, including two members of a family, drowned and five others went missing, as a boat capsized in the Chetora river in Sarail upazila under Brahmanbaria due to strong current in the river caused by the influence of cyclone 'Komen'.
Three people were killed in a boat capsize in Meghna River in Chandpur.
A child was killed when a wall collapsed in Moheshkhali Island on Thursday Morning, while two others died in a boat capsize along the Moheshkhali channel due to the storm.
Another man died after he was hit by a tree at St Martin's Island in early morning.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) in its special bulletin said the cyclonic storm 'Komen' over north-east bay and adjoining Bangladesh coast moved slightly northwards until 9:30pm Thursday.
Saint Martin's Union Parishad Chairman Nurul Amin said the storm uprooted hundreds of trees and damaged over a hundred houses there.
It hit Teknaf hard as well. Zafar Alam, the Upazila chairman, said over 300 houses in the area were either partially or fully damaged with at least 20 people injured.
The government has evacuated about 300,000 people from the vulnerable coastal areas to 288 cyclone shelters.
The government stocked shelters with supplies, deployed disaster response forces and evacuated thousands of people in coastal areas, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said.
Thirteen districts in the possible path of the cyclone had been covered by the evacuation, he added.
Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) said it suspended cargo handling at the outer anchorage and jetties in the port. It has also issued cautionary signal number-3 in the port area. All kinds of cargo loading and unloading remained suspended.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Thursday suspended until further notice the operation vessels on water routes throughout the country, as cyclone 'Komen' is approaching.
Besides, the authorities suspended ferry services under Roads and Highway Division throughout the country because of the bad weather. The services will remain suspended until further notice. The ferry services will only operate for carrying people to shelter centers in limited areas.
