Data point to pandemic’s falling trend

Declining trend in major indicators of Covid-19 pandemic continued in the country, as the number of tests, infections, recoveries and deaths showed a sharp decline last week that ended on October 03.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of tests, infections, recoveries and fatalities dropped by 9.05 per cent, 7.70 per cent, 21.53 per cent and 9.26 per cent respectively than that of the previous week that expired on September 26.

In the 39th epidemiological week (from September 20 to September 26) since the detection of first coronavirus case in the country on March 08, some 10,501 people tested positive from 89,096 tested samples.

During the seven days, some 14,391 people got cured from the deadly viral disease, while 216 others died.

In the following or 40th epidemiological week (from September 27 to October 03), the number of tests, infections, recoveries and deaths came down to 81,030, 9,612, 11,292 and 196 respectively. However, a total of 1,125 people tested Covid-19 positive in the last 24 hours until Sunday noon.

On Sunday's daily health bulletin on coronavirus, the DGHS said a total of 9,859 samples were tested across the country since Saturday noon. Of the tests, some 1,125 samples or 11.41 per cent were found Covid-19 positive along with 23 deaths recorded during the period, it mentioned.

With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 3,68,690 and 5,348 respectively, noted the bulletin, signed by the DGHS additional director general (administration).

With the latest figures, the rate of infections and deaths stood at 18.53 per cent and 1.45 per cent respectively.

Of the total deaths, 50.34 per cent was recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (20.34 per cent), Khulna (8.17 per cent), Rajshahi (6.62 per cent), Rangpur (4.56 per cent), Sylhet (4.36 per cent), Barishal (3.52 per cent), and Mymensingh (2.09 per cent).

At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 1,587 patients recovered, taking the entire tally of recovery to 2,81,656.

Globally, over 35.1 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 10,38,819 have died until Sunday 6:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
