Deadline for legalising untaxed money expires tomorrow

The deadline for legalising undisclosed money by the taxpayers expires tomorrow (Tuesday) amid a mounting pressure for extension of time.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been receiving appeals from different section of people including lawyers and businessmen for extension of time by one month.
Sources said that the gov ernment might consider the extension of time if it thought the move would bring more disclosures for payment of tax.
Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury will sit in a meeting with the NBR officials on July 31 to review the overall situation.
Until Sunday, untaxed money to the tune of Tk 4.41 billion was legalised as some 2,282 persons availed themselves of the opportunity, an NBR official said.
The board has received about Tk 940 million in tax and the rest of the amount came as penalty at a rate 5.0 per cent.
NBR source said the board has received Tk 280 million today (Sunday) alone, the highest amount of tax paid in a single day since June 4.
The NBR issued a statutory regulatory order (SRO) giving the facility to legalise undisclosed income through payment of 5.0 per cent penalty in addition to normal tax.
However, different tax zones of the NBR have been receiving response from the individuals, who are under legal action of the government.
The zones have refused to accept the disclosure of money by those individuals because of a restriction imposed by the NBR through a SRO.
