Death toll crosses 5,800-mark

23 more die, 1308 more infected

With 23 new coronavirus-related fatalities on Sunday, the death toll due to the deadly virus infection crossed 5,800-mark in the country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The total fatalities now stand at 5,803, and the densely populated country of around 165 million population is currently ranked 30th in the world as far as fatalities of the pandemic is concerned.

The entire caseload of coronavirus infections reached 3,98,815 with 1,308 more people infected afresh in the last 24 hours ending on Sunday morning.

The latest single-day infections came from a total of 11,103 samples tested during the same period, and the infection rate was 11.78 per cent.

Although the infection rate started dropping, the healthcare experts think that it is still over the danger level, and also asked the government agencies concerned to enforce the health guidelines strictly to avert further spread of the virus.

The DGHS daily health bulletin, issued on Tuesday, said a total of 11,103 samples were tested across the country since Saturday morning.

With the tests, a total of 22,57,589 samples have so far been tested here. The overall infection rate is as high as 17.67 per cent, and it is the second highest in South Asia after India.

Of the tests, some 1,308 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 23 more deaths recorded during the period.

"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 3,98,815 and 5,803 respectively," mentioned the bulletin, signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana.

Nineteen of the latest deaths were recorded in Dhaka division, while one each in Chattogram, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions, it noted.

At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 1,544 patients recovered, taking the entire tally of recovery to 3,15,107 and the recovery rate to 79.01 per cent.

Globally, more than 43.0 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus, and 11,56,019 have died until Sunday 6:30 pm, according to Worldometer info.
