Casualties from the severe cyclone Remal reached 16 on Tuesday, while millions were still bearing the brunt of waterlogging amid the damage to dams in several districts.

The Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc on Bangladesh between May 27 and 28 with its 135 kmph speed and heavy rainfall, battering coastal areas and inundating livestock, shrimp farms, crops, and orchards in the coastal districts.

Remal made landfall late on Sunday night near Bangladesh's southern port of Mongla and India's Sagar Islands in West Bengal before gradually weakening as a deep depression from Monday morning across the country.

The cyclone disrupted power supply to millions.

Mohammad Nazmul Abedin, joint secretary (planning and development, NDRCC) of the disaster management and relief ministry, told the FE that the death toll reached 16, with four found dead in Patuakhali.

He said many areas were still out of the mobile network, creating difficulties in getting information.

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibbur Rahman earlier on Monday said the Remal affected at least 3.75 million people in 19 districts of the country.

According to the ministry, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Barishal, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, Feni, Cox's Bazar, Chattogram, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Narail, Gopalganj, Shariatpur, and Jashore districts have been mainly affected by the severe cyclonic storm Remal.

The state minister said 9,424 shelters were opened in the coastal areas in view of the cyclone, and more than 0.8 million people went to these shelters as well as local educational institutions.

A total of 1,471 medical teams have been formed to provide medical care to the affected people, out of which 1,400 teams are operational, he said.

The Met Office in its bulletin at 9:00 pm on Tuesday, said the cyclone, which turned into a land depression over Manikganj and adjoining areas, moved northeastwards and was lying over Moulvibazar and adjoining areas.

It was likely to move northeastwards further and weaken gradually. Meanwhile, the agriculture ministry was yet to give any information on the extent of loss and damages to the farms.

The department of fisheries said approximately 74,500 shrimp enclosures in the Khulna region were affected by flooding and heavy rains resulting from Cyclone Remal.

The department of livestock services (DLS) said 0.2 million cattle and 0.9 million poultry birds were affected by the Remal.
