Defer upazila polls by one to two months: Zillur

Awami League acting President Zillur Rahman Monday urged the Election Commission to defer the date of upazila elections by one to two months, reports UNB.
He, however, personally thinks that his party would take part in the upazila elections on the declared dates of December 24 and 28.
"We want the government defers the dates of the upazila elections by one-two months. I think the environment of general elections will be harmed if upazila elections are held on the declared dates," Zillur told reporters at his Gulshan house Monday tonight.
He said at least five candidates will be in the race from each Upazila for the post of Upazila chairman. If it so, how a candidate for a parliamentary seat will conduct his campaign at the same time?" he wondered.
Zillur said it will be wise if the election commission revises the declared dates for the upazila election. He said the Commission can announce the dates now but the next elected government will hold the elections.
"It will not cause any harm to the government or the nation," he observed.
He also welcomed the relaxation of provisions for registration of political parties.
Zillur, however, noted that Jamaat-e-Islami will be benefited from the easing off the rules for party registration.
"Jamaat from the very beginning has been opposing the party registration provision. Now, they will be able to participate in upazila elections without registration," he said.
