Bangladesh's western development partners Thursday welcomed the separation of the judiciary from the executive as an important step towards ensuring greater independence of the judiciary and strengthening democracy in the country.
German Ambassador in Bangladesh Frank Meyke termed the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive control as a historic day for Bangladesh.
"This is a historic day for Bangladesh, indeed, and a great success for the caretaker government (CG)", he told the UNB in his instant reaction.
The ambassador said, "We, Germans, congratulate the people of Bangladesh on this important step of strengthening democracy."
The United States (US) congratulated the CG on implementing the separation of the judiciary from the executive as an important step towards ensuring greater judicial independence.
"The US Government congratulates the CG's initiative to implement this reform process", a spokesperson for the US Embassy said.
The spokesperson said the separation of the judiciary and executive branches is "an important step towards ensuring greater judicial independence and brings Bangladesh closer to the return to democracy."
The United Kingdom (UK) hailed the separation of the judiciary from the executive control, saying that judicial independence is a cornerstone for the defence of due process.
"We congratulate the Government, Civil Service and Judiciary on this historic change", a spokesperson for the British High Commission said.
The spokesperson said judicial independence is "a cornerstone for the defence of due process and a guard against the potential for power to be exercised arbitrarily."
"An independent judiciary has a responsibility to provide justice equally, for the fulfillment of the fundamental rights of all citizens", the spokesperson said.
"We reiterate our support for this goal, and the Judiciary's role in achieving it", the spokesperson added.
