Dhaka div sees half of Covid deaths

50 more die in 24 hrs

Dhaka division accounts for almost half the total fatalities from Covid-19 in the country, official data reveals.

Of 3,234 deaths caused by the novel coronavirus since March, 1,549 or 47.9 per cent occurred in the division, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services or DGHS.

The agency said 50 people more died in the last 24 hours until Tuesday morning, including 29 in the Dhaka region.

Of the remaining deceased, five each died in Chattogram and Rajshahi, four each in Khulna andRangpur and one each in Barishal, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions.

The DGHS additional director general Nasima Sultana presented the data at the regular online news conference.

Among the deceased, the majority or 44 were male, Dr Sultana said, adding three were between 31-40 years old, six between 41-50, 17 between 51-60, 18 between 61-70, five within 71-80 and one was 81-90 years old.

The death rate against the detection is 1.33 per cent, she added.

Dr Sultana, who oversees administrative affairs, said 1,918 more tested positive with the highly-infectious disease in the 24-hour period bringing the total tally to 244,020 since March 8 when the country detected its first case.

So far a total of 1,201,256 tests, including 7,712 in the reporting period, have been conducted in the country, she said.

The DGHS data revealed the country has been witnessing an upward trend in the number of deaths.

During the Eid holiday 21 people died on Saturday, 22 on Sunday and 30 on Monday, while the number of tests and detection was lower in the period.

During the period, 2,199 cases were detected on Saturday and 886 and 1,356 were reported in the following two days.

In terms of new cases, the current infection rate is 24.87 per cent and the total infection rate has been at 20.31 per cent.

Currently, a total of 83 laboratories are conducting coronavirus tests, Ms Sultana told reporters.

She said 1,955 people recovered from the viral disease, taking the total figure to 139,860, which is 57.31 per cent against the total detected cases.

In terms of total recovery, Bangladesh is currently the 16th nation on the global list prepared by an information portal, Worldometer.

According to it, Bangladesh is also the 16th hardest-hit nation in terms of total cases.

So far, almost 0.7 million people have died from the disease and over 18.47 million cases have been reported across the globe.
