Dhaka feels winter chills

City-dwellers in Dhaka experienced chilly weather as a mild cold wave was sweeping over the country's Kishoreganj, Pabna, Dinajpur and Chuadanga districts on Friday.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in its forecast that weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country today (Saturday).

Moderate to thick fog may occur across the country from Friday midnight till this morning and it may continue till noon at places.

Air navigation, inland water transport and road communication may be disrupted temporarily due to fog.

Night temperature may rise slightly and day temperature may fall slightly over the country.

Cold weather is likely to continue at places across the country.

Country's highest temperature on Thursday was recorded at 27.3 degrees Celsius in Teknaf while lowest temperature on Friday was 09.6 degrees Celsius jointly at Nikli in Kishoreganj and Chuadanga.

Ridge of sub-continental high extends up to West Bengal and adjoining northwestern part of Bangladesh.

Seasonal low lies over South Bay, extending its trough to North.

In its 72-hour forecast, the Met Office also warned of moderate to dense fog blanketing the country, potentially disrupting air, sea, and road traffic.

The biting cold is expected to intensify, with temperature hovering around the cold wave threshold.

The Met Office classifies temperatures below 6 degrees Celsius as a severe cold wave, 6-8 degrees Celsius as a moderate cold wave, and 8-10 degrees Celsius as a mild cold wave.

A meteorologist predicted a gradual easing of the cold spell over the next two days, although foggy condition may persist for an additional two to three days.

As Bangladesh faces this winter challenge, residents are advised to take necessary precautions, and the authorities are urged to monitor and manage potential disruption to transportation and daily activities.
