Dhaka's hospitals saw an influx of patients following the powerful earthquake that struck the capital and surrounding regions on Friday.
Nearly 100 patients sought medical care at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) after the earthquake and of them, 18 were admitted there for further treatment.
A brick-built rooftop railing collapsed on the road in Old Dhaka's Kasaituli area, killing Rafiul Islam, 21, a student of Sir Salimullah Medical College, Abdur Rahim, 48, a fabrics trader, and Rahim's son Abul Aziz Remon, 12. Rafiul went to buy meat with his mother minutes before the collapse. He died at hospital, while his mother underwent emergency surgery.
According to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) officials, 41 patients arrived there for treatment by 2:45pm, including two Dhaka University students. Six were admitted while the rest given primary treatment and released.
Health Adviser Nurjahan Begum said that all the government hospitals were instructed to ensure proper treatment for those injured in the earthquake. She made the remark while visiting injured patients at DMCH around noon.
She inquired about condition of the admitted patients and spoke to the on-duty doctors.
"We have asked every hospital to make sure there is no lapse in the treatment of the injured. All government hospitals are under instruction," she told reporters.
"The impact of the earthquake may have felt stronger because it originated nearby. In some places the magnitude was around 5.2, but the number of injured appears higher. Some students in Dhaka jumped from buildings out of panic. We are trying our best to ensure proper treatment," she added.
