The Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has been closed sine die after clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) factions at a residential hall early Tuesday led to the death of its secretary general Abul Kalam Azad alias Rajib.
Police said the clash that turned the area into a veritable battlefield ensued at Fazle Rabbi Hall at about 1:30am when the followers of former BCL leader Dr Bidyut Barua attacked the supporters of hall-unit general secretary Rajib over establishing supremacy on the campus.
During the chase and counter chase and the skirmishes that followed for about two hours, some 25 students on both the sides were injured. The bloody clashes created panic among the general students.
Of the injured, eighteen were admitted to the medical section of the college from where critically injured Rajib was shifted to the CMH (combined military hospital) where he was declared dead in the evening.
"Rajib succumbed to his injuries at about 6:30pm at CMH," maternal uncle of the victim Haider Ali told FE.
Following the bloody clashes, the DMC authorities in an emergency meeting suspended all classes and examinations of MBBS courses until further notice.
The students were also asked to vacant their dormitories by 4pm Tuesday to avert further clashes. However, the order will not be applicable to the foreign students.
The reason behind the violence was not clear," DMC principal Dr Deen Mohammad told reporters.
The postgraduate examinations, however, would be held on schedule, he said.
The DMC authority also formed a 3-member committee with professor Muhiuddin Ahmed as the head to investigate the incident. The other members are Dr Abdul Al Mamun and Dr Mohamad Belal Alam.
