Dhaka stocks inched their way up Monday after falling in two straight sessions, with continued decline in the turnover.
The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), however, fluctuated heavily as the benchmark DGEN went down by over 47 points in the first half hour of the trade only to rise again before hitting 23.26 points at the final minutes of the trade.
Finally, all the market barometers - the benchmark DSE General Index (DGEN), All Shares Price Index and DSE-20 - gained 9.32 points, 9.03 points and 7.45 points to close at 2683.40, 2304.68 and 2478.51 respectively.
The indices moved to the positive territory because of share prices rise of some market heavy weight companies like Titas Gas, Beximco Pharma and Square Pharma, leaving the cascading effect on other shares, according to the market operators.
"The investors chased the stocks on the day taking opportunity of lucrative share prices that saw downtrend in the last couple of months," said a stock broker.
The total turnover continued to decline to Tk 2.02 billion against the previous day's Tk 2.62 billion. Of the total turnover, the top ten turnover leaders accounted for nearly 49 per cent.
The gainers outshined the losers on the day as out of 218 issues traded, 119 advanced, 88 declined and 11 remained changed.
The total market capitalization, however, increased to Tk 940.51 billion against Tk 936.02 billion.
A total of 532800 shares of Titas Gas worth Tk 188.57 million were sold at the prime bourse. Share prices of Titas, the top turnover leader accounted for over 9 per cent of the total turnover, posted a rise of 0.07 per cent to end at Tk 357.25 per share.
Stock prices of Beximco Pharma gained 2.24 per cent to end at Tk 109.50 per share, making it second top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 156.13 million traded.
Beximco Limited was the third top turnover leader with shares worth Tk 146.13 million traded and its share prices, the second top gainer, rose 12.97 per cent to end at Tk 121.00 per share.
ACI Limited, Square Pharma, BATBC, Lanka Bangla Finance, Islami Bank, Keya Cosmetics and Grameen Mutual Fund One were the other turnover leaders on the day.
Stock prices of the Fu-Wang Ceramic was the top gainer with a rise of 18.47 per cent in its stock prices, followed by Beximco Limited 12.97 per cent, Modern Industries 9.75 per cent, Rupali Insurance 8.61 per cent, Tulip Dairy and Food 7.69 per cent and Beximco Fisheries 7.36 per cent.
Maq Enterprises was the biggest loser with a fall of 8.77 per cent, Gachihata Aquaculture 8.21 per cent, United Insurance 7.69 per cent, HR Textile 7.44 per cent and Maq Paper 7.14 per cent.
