FE Report
Bangladesh-Myanmar second Joint Trade Commission (JTC) meeting will be held today (Monday) in Dhaka aiming to boost the bilateral trade relations between the two countries, official sources said.
The meeting will discuss the overall bilateral trade position including investment in Burmese farming sector, avoidance of double taxation, establishment of direct shipping link and easing visa regulations for Bangladeshi businessmen.
During the JTC meeting, Bangladesh may seek access for the country's pharmaceutical products to the market of Myanmar and resolve banking problems for strengthening bilateral trade relations between the two countries.
Deputy Commerce Minister of Myanmar Brigadier General Aung Tun will lead an 18-member Burmese delegation at the meeting while Commerce Secretary Feroz Ahmed will lead the Bangladesh side, the sources added.
"We will review the overall bilateral trade position existing between the countries aiming to take necessary measures to strengthen the relations," a senior official of the commerce ministry told the FE Sunday.
The progress in the construction of direct road link will also be discussed in the meeting, another official of the ministry said.
Bangladesh and Myanmar signed an agreement September last based on a memorandum of understanding of 2004 to build a 133-kilometre highway linking Buthidaung in Rakhine State of Myanmar and Ramu in Bangladesh territory to promote border trade.
An inter-ministerial meeting has already been held in the city to assess the position of Bangladesh in bilateral trade, commerce and investment with neighbouring Burma, officially known as Myanmar.
The first JTC meeting was held in Yangon in 2004.
