FE Report
Drivers of all modes of transportation must avoid the tendency of going through wrong direction on the city streets as Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) installed a new device Friday to prevent motor vehicles from using the wrong lane.
DMP's traffic department set up the retractable spikes on Hare Road near the state guest house Sugandha on a trial basis to avert any accident through prompting people to follow the traffic rules.
Inaugurating the installation of the modern device, called Protirodh (prevention), Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker said they have taken the initiative to ensure safe movement of passengers and pedestrians in the overpopulated city.
Describing functioning of the device, he said the spikes will retract when a vehicle goes in the right direction but will puncture the tyres whenever the vehicles move in the wrong way.
The police boss said moving through the opposite direction is not only traffic rules violation but also poses threat to life.
"So, the spikes will surely help bring discipline on the capital's traffic management system by reducing the risk of road accidents," he said.
Another senior traffic official said Dholaikhal-based Sohel Metal & Engineering Company supplied the spikes, made of stainless steel, with the technical assistance of local engineers.
"So, there is no possibility of its getting rusty in the rainy season," he said adding that the sharp blades of the device will be in place after 45 millimetre of distance.
He said they would launch a one-month-long awareness campaign relating to the device. "If we get positive response from the road users, such device will be installed in each of the key streets of the capital," he added.
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, its Additional Commissioner Abdul Jalil and Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Meer Rezaul Alam were, among others, present at the function.
