The National Board of Revenue (NBR) said Thursday any kind of donation given to the Chief Adviser's Relief Fund will be considered as tax-free.
Referring to a statutory regulatory order (SRO) issued on 1991, NBR chairman Badiur Rahman said: "A taxpayer will get tax exemption for the amount donated to the Prime Minister's or Chief Adviser's Relief Fund as per SRO no-125."
The country's business community has been requesting the government to declare the money spent on flood relief as tax-free.
Responding to the plea of the businessmen, the NBR chairman said: "Anybody can contribute to flood relief activities, but he will have to pay tax for the amount spent on the relief excepting the donation made to chief adviser's relief fund."
According to existing income tax law, any donation worth up to Tk 0.25 million given, except for the CA's Relief Fund, is tax free, but an individual has to pay tax for the donation made above the ceiling.
