FE Report
A bus driver was killed and a helper one injured as a rickshaw passenger opened his licensed firearm after a scuffle among them over a minor accident in the capital's Fulbaria area Thursday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Nizam Uddin, driver of an Abdullahpur-bound passenger bus.
Shahbagh police said the scuffle took place at about 6:30am as the bus of route number-3 hit a rickshaw near Fulbaria bus terminal. The rickshaw was carrying two passengers - a businessman of Siddikbazar area Riaz Morshed Jommon and his younger brother Khokan.
Being infuriated after the minor accident, both brothers locked in an altercation with bus staff which turned into a clash after few moments as about dozen of transport workers at the bus terminal came to the scene and started beating the brothers.
At one stage of the clash, Jommon fired gunshots from his licensed pistol that struck bus driver Nizam and his helper Rasel.
Nizam died on the spot while Rasel was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment, witnesses said.
The transport workers became unruly immediately after hearing the death news and started vandalism in protest of the killing by blockading Gulistan-Sadarghat road for more than an hour.
The protestors later withdrew their blockade after getting assurance from the authorities that criminals will be punished after a fair investigation.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the brothers from the hands of violent workers and admitted them to the DMCH, officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh police station Rezaul Karim told the FE.
The police officer said they also recovered the firearm used in the shootout. "We've arrested the brothers and interrogating them to know why the firearm was used during the incident," he added.
