Dhaka University (DU) took a festive look Sunday with the arrival of most of the students on the campus, as classes and other academic activities of the university resumed on the day after an unscheduled closure of 66-days.
Academic activities of Rajshahi University (RU), Jagannath University (JU) and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) also resumed on the same day with strict security measures taken on the campuses.
At the DU, classes of all the departments and institutes were held peacefully. Students started entering the campus from the early morning in groups to attend their classes. Many of them were seen embracing one another as it was a reunion after a long gap.
Different parts of the campus including DU central library, Madhu's Canteen, Mall Chattar, and TSC etc were overcrowded with many students.
No police contingents were seen in and around the campus on the first day of resuming classes at the university. However, the members of various law-enforcing agencies were seen patrolling frequently at the campus in plain clothes.
Several first-year students distributed sweetmeats among friends and others at Madhu's Canteen to express their relief and ecstasy at the reopening of the varsity.
A good number of reformist student leaders also thronged the Madhu's Canteen, and expressed their opinions to the reporters in favour of constructive and merit-oriented student politics.
The central library was very congested as a large number of students were vying to get their required books because examinations of different faculties and institutes of the university are just knocking at the door.
When asked, some of the students said, they felt very happy and pleased because they were attending classes after a long closure.
"We are happy with the reopening of our campus. Now our one and only demand to the authorities is that they should take all possible initiatives to overcome the severe session jam we are likely to face due to the unscheduled closure", they added.
When contacted, many of the students told the FE that they seek a congenial and stable atmosphere of education at the university to pursue their studies smoothly in the upcoming days.
DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) Acting President Tajmery SA Islam said, all the teachers of the university had taken classes Sunday with 'shocked hearts', as they had to attend the academic activities without four of their colleagues who had not yet been released.
