Dhaka University teacher of Applied Physics Department Nimchandra Bhowmik was sent to jail after he surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka Tuesday.
Bhowmik, also provost of the university's Jagannath hall, produced himself before the court of magistrate SM Ferdous Ahmed at around 10 am in the wake of a warrant of arrest against him.
Police pressed charges against him as 'he provoked students to go for violence' on the DU campus from August 20 to 22.
He is one the four DU teachers who have been accused by police of violating emergency powers rules (EPR) on the campus. Of them, president of DU Teachers' Association (DUTA) Sadrul Amin, general secretary Md Anwar Hossain and social sciences faculty's dean Harun-or-Rashid have already been sent to jail.
Lawyers of Bhowmik asked for division in jail for him but the court didn't pay heed to their appeal. However, the court directed jail authorities to give him proper treatment.
