President of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Sadrul Amin was sent to jail after he surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka Sunday.
He presented himself before the court of magistrate SM Ferdous Ahmed at around 1:30 pm in the wake of an arrest warrant against him on charges of violating emergency powers rules (EPR) on DU campus.
Amin is one of the four DU teachers who have been accused by police of taking provocative roles in the campus violence from August 20 to 22. Of them, DUTA general secretary Md Anwar Hossain and social sciences faculty's dean Harun-or-Rashid are in jail now.
The court directed the jail authorities to provide proper treatment and division for Sadrul Amin as per the jail provision following the hearing.
Lawyers of DUTA president Masud Ahmed Talukder and Golam Mostafa Khan asked for his division and treatment as there is no rule to seek bail under the EPR.
A Dhaka court earlier issued a warrant of arrest and ordered confiscation of wealth of 16 persons including Sadrul Amin and DU Jagannath hall provost Nimchandra Bhowmik, who is absconding.
