EC to introduce 'no vote' in polls

June 06, 2007 00:00:00

Under a comprehensive electoral reform, launched by the caretaker government, 'no vote' is being introduced to give the voter free will to vote for one or reject all of the candidates in a constituency, reports UNB.

But it is yet to be decided by the Election Commission what if such noes hold sway over the ayes in voting.

"There was a suggestion for holding by-polls if 50 percent no votes are counted... (We have) not yet decided (on this)... But there will be 'no vote' for sure... There will be an option 'to none' at the end (of the ballot paper)," Election Commissioner Brg. Gen. (rtd) M Sakhawat Hussain told reporters at his office Tuesday afternoon.

The EC wants to facilitate the voters so that they come to register in the voter list and cast their vote, he said, adding that the voters have a right to express themselves and that is why the 'no vote' will be introduced.

"How we will ensure the voter's right? Why the voters will come to the polling stations if they don't like the candidates. We want maximum voters to come to polling stations... Where they will tell that they are not liking anyone... Besides, the winner will also come to know (from the number of votes he got) how much popular he is."
