Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain Monday said the Election Commission (EC) would look into the legal notice against former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia after having the allegation against her, reports UNB.
A Supreme Court lawyer gave her the legal notice alleging providing of wrong information by her about her date of birth and educational qualifications while registering as voter.
Meanwhile, 2,460 aspirants have submitted nominations to run the race for 300 seats of parliament in the general election scheduled for December 29, many with corruption charges pressed against them during the purge conducted by the military-assisted interim regime.
Sakhawat in this connection said the nomination filings were completed Sunday amid a complete calm environment, without any bad incident, unlike on the previous occasions when there had been a lot of commotion.
"This is a big achievement as there was no incident during the filing of the nomination papers across the country," he told reporters at the EC secretariat Monday afternoon.
He said the returning officers would take effective measures about the "corrupt candidates" while scrutinising their papers.
"According to the law, the returning officers will look into the matter. Scrutiny of the nomination papers remains to be done," he said when his attention was drawn about the corruption suspects in the race for election to parliament.
Replying to a question, he said the voters of the country would determine who would be eligible or ineligible candidates in the election.
Another report of BSS added, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda Monday said the state of emergency would be withdrawn at a suitable time before the Jatiyo Sangsad election.
"We have already given our opinion in this regard to the Chief Adviser, and he has agreed with us and assured that the emergency would be withdrawn at a suitable time before the polls," the CEC told the reporters after he paid a courtesy call on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban.
He said lifting of emergency is a much-discussed issue, and all political parties demanded withdrawal of emergency before the election. "The upcoming polls would not be held under the state of emergency," he hoped.
