Eid likely Saturday in BD, subject to moon sighting

President, PM scheduled to join main Eid congregation at National Eidgah

FE REPORT | March 19, 2026 00:00:00

Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival for Muslims, is likely to be celebrated across Bangladesh on Saturday as the Shawwal moon was not sighted in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

The Arab country will celebrate Eid tomorrow (Friday), according to Saudi media reports.

However, the National Moon Sighting Committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30pm at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque today (Thursday) to review sighting of the Shawwal moon from across the country and announce the official date of Eid.

The festival marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.

Authorities have finalised extensive arrangements for Eid congregations in the capital as the main congregation (jamaat) is set to be held at the National Eidgah at 8:30am.

The venue, located adjacent to the Supreme Court, has been prepared to accommodate around 35,000 devotees, with enhanced security, sanitation, and emergency medical facilities in place.

In case of inclement weather, the main congregation will be shifted to Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 9:00am.

Five separate Eid congregations will also be held at Baitul Mukarram, beginning at 7:00am, followed by successive prayers throughout the morning.

Additionally, an Eid jamaat will be organised at South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 8:00am, where lawmakers, officials and the public are expected to join.

In the northern part of the capital, the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will hold its central congregation at the old Trade Fair ground in Agargaon at 8:00am, with making separate arrangements for women, ablution facilities, and coordinated services from police, power and water authorities.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin is scheduled to attend the main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah. After offering prayers, he is expected to exchange Eid greetings with dignitaries and citizens.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will also offer Eid prayers at the National Eidgah before proceeding to the state guest house Jamuna, where he will exchange greetings with diplomats, cabinet members, politicians, academics and people from various walks of life. Later, he is expected to visit Zia Udyan to pay tributes to former president Ziaur Rahman.

Leader of the opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman is expected to offer Eid prayers at a major congregation in the capital, likely at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, and exchange greetings with party leaders and supporters.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam is also expected to join an Eid congregation in Dhaka, where he will exchange greetings with party activists and the public following prayers.

Law-enforcement agencies, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, will deploy additional personnel across major Eid congregations to ensure safety and smooth movement of devotees.
