Markets were humming with a shopping binge Saturday while holidaymakers were heading for distant native homes or resorts as preparations now peaked for celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslims, Monday if the new moon of Shawal is sighted today (Sunday), reports UNB.
A three-day government holiday begins today (Sunday) for the Eid festival. However, the government has announced extension of the vacation by a day up to September 24 (Wednesday) if the moon is not sighted today.
"If the moon of the holy month of Shawal is sighted Sunday, the holy Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed in a befitting manner all over the country the next day," said an Islamic Foundation release Saturday.
The new moon will end a month-long fasting at daytime by devout
Muslims during the outgoing lunar month of Ramadan. The Muslims will offer Eid prayers seeking divine blessings for peace, progress and prosperity of the country as well as of the Muslim Ummah.
They would also pay visit to relatives and friends, exchanging greetings amidst a festive mood.
Dhaka City corporation sources said all preparations are nearly complete for holding the main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah on the High Court premises.
Dhaka City Corporation will organise a total of 362 Eid congregations, including the main one at the National Eidgah at 9:00 am.
Special Security Force (SSF), intelligence agencies, police and plainclothes police will ensure security of the main congregation while security of the rest Eid congregation sites will be provided by police, he added.
Five Eid congregations will be held at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque at 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am and 12noon.
Besides, more Eid congregations would be held at all major mosques, Eidgahs and open spaces in the city as elsewhere across the country.
The country's biggest Eid congregation will be held at Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj.
