FE Report
Dr Atiur Rahman, the incumbent governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB), has sought upgradation of his post to the rank and status of a state minister.
Atiur in a letter to the Prime Minister recently said the rank and status of the country's central bank should be elevated to that of a state minister as is the case in neighbouring India. The governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) enjoys the rank and status of a state minister.
He suggested the PM to upgrade the post of BB Governor in the current Warrant of Precedence in which the BB Governor is placed under serial no. 15. Others falling under the same serial with the governor of BB, are Attorney-General, Comptroller and Auditor-General and Ombudsman.
Chief Election Commissioner, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Deputy leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Judges of the Supreme Court (Appellate Division), Ministers of State of the Republic and Whips fall under the serial no .8 of the existing Warrant of Precedence.
Atiur has also sent a copy of his letter, addressed to the PM, to Finance Minister AMA Muhith, sources said.
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) officials said as the letter has been written to the Prime Minister (PM), they have nothing to do.
"It is the matter to be dealt only by PM herself and Cabinet Division," a high official in the MoF told the FE on Sunday.
Asked, officials concerned in the Cabinet Division said they are yet to get any instruction towards providing the BB governor the status of a state minister.
