The Bangladesh Embassy in Thailand has taken an initiative to identify Bangladeshis following media reports about discovery of a mass grave in a remote jungle near Malaysian border.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Thailand Saida Muna Tasneem said the embassy had already sent a note verbal to the ministry of foreign affairs of Thailand, seeking access to the spot for identifying the nationals, if any.
The envoy told the FE over phone that she had sought an appointment with the ministry concerned in this regard on Monday as Sunday was the weekend there.
"We have informed three ministries dealing with the incident to confirm it," Ms Muna added.
Meanwhile, the ministry of foreign affairs of Bangladesh in a press release said Thai authorities had discovered a mass grave containing the remains of 32 people reportedly from Bangladesh and Myanmar in Sadao district of Thailand.
There were further reports that a man from Bangladesh survived there.
It also said the Bangladesh Embassy had been in touch with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand and sought details of the incident.
The embassy has also requested the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrange an urgent access to the survivor by its consular team.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had given assurance of all-out cooperation in this regard. They further said that the survivor was being treated in a local hospital and his condition remained stable.
The Bangladesh Embassy stays in contact with Thai authorities for follow-up to the matter of consular interview and nationality verification.
Earlier, several dozen Bangladeshis were rescued after being abducted and shipped to Thailand in October last year. The Bangladesh ambassador said the rescued Bangladeshis were repatriated at government expenses.
