Ensure power supply to agri projects: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Monday directed authorities concerned to ensure uninterrupted power supply to agricultural projects during the upcoming irrigation season for increasing food production, reports BSS.

She issued the directive when the secretary of the ministry of power, energy and mineral resources apprised the Cabinet that 130mw additional electricity had already been added to the national grid and 700mw more power would be added to the grid by June.

The Prime Minister (PM) presided over the meeting at the Cabinet division in the Bangladesh Secretariat. Ministers, advisers to the PM and state ministers attended the meeting. Cabinet Secretary M Abdul Aziz and secretaries concerned were present.

Hasina also asked the officials concerned to remain alert to the power supply so that the framers could not face any trouble during the irrigation season.

For keeping prices of essentials at a tolerable level, she asked the officials to strengthen Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) for smooth imports of essentials, including rice, pulses and edible oil.

The Cabinet approved 20 ordinances while Criminal Law Amendment (Amendment) Act, 2009 was withdrawn and Grameen Bank (Amendment) Act, 2009 was sent back for further scrutiny.

While approving Consumer-Rights Protection Act, 2009 the Cabinet asked for strengthening TCB as the people could buy essentials at affordable prices.

The other approved ordinances include Bangladesh Shilpa Bank (Amendment) Act, 2009, the President's (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Act, 2009, Islamic University (Amendment) Act, 2009, Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Act, 2009, Bangladesh Laws (Revision and Declaration) (Amendment) Act, 2009, National Human Rights Act, 2009, Gram Sarker (Repeal) Act, 2009, Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, Local Government (Municipality) Act, 2009.

Besides, the Cabinet approved the National Board of Revenue (Amendment) Act, 2009 by repealing the National Board of Revenue (Amendment) Ordinance, 2008, Bangladesh Biman Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2009, Upzila Council (Repeal Act Reintroduction and Amendment) Act, 2009 by amending Upazila Council Act, 1998, the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (Amendment) Act, 2009, Dhaka Power Distribution Authority (Amendment) Act, 2009, Proposed Information Rights Act, 2009 by keeping provision for three members in the Commission, Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Act, 2009, Mobile Court Act, 2009, Public Finance and Budget Management Act, 2009 and Bangladesh Flag Vessel (Protection) (Amendment) Act, 2009.
