The government has signed engineering procurement construction (EPC) contracts with three companies for setting up five peaking power plants to generate around 420 megawatts (mw) of electricity by August 2011 next.
State-owned Power Development Board (PDB) signed two contracts with local consortium of Energypac Power Generation and Energypac Engineering for installing two furnace oil-run power plants - one 100 mw capacity plant at Gopalganj and another 50 mw plant at Faridpur.
The contract price for Gopalganj 100 mw plant is Tk 6.93 billion, of which foreign currencies comprise US$ 13.36 million and Euro 48.62 million and the local currency component is Tk 906 million. The contract price for Faridpur 50 mw plant is Tk 3.84 billion, of which foreign currencies comprise $ 8.90 million and Euro 25.54 million, and the local currency component is Tk 539 million.
The government has also signed two EPC contracts with the Chinese Guangdong Power Engineering Corporation for building two dual-fuel power plants - a 100 mw capacity plant at Hathazari and another 100 mw plant at Dohazari in Chittagong.
The contract price for Hathazari 100 mw plant is Tk 9.08 billion, of which Euro 78.49 million will be in foreign currency and Tk 862 million in local currency.
For Dohazari 100 mw plant the contract price is Tk 9.71 billion, of which Euro 84.63 million will be in foreign currency and Tk 849 million in local currency
The PDB has signed the remaining deal with South Korean Hyundai Heavy Industries Co for setting up a 70 mw furnace-oil run power plants at Bera in Pabna.
The contract price for the plant is Tk 4.84 billion, of which US$ 63.51 million will be in foreign currency and Tk 464 million in local currency.
Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, the Prime Minister's adviser on energy issues Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury said that the EPC contracts have been signed in the fastest ever move within months of floating tenders.
He said the government is working on the right track to increase electricity generation in line with its promise to expedite power production.
State minister for power and energy Mohammad Enamul Haque hoped that the EPC contractors would complete their works within the stipulated timeframe.
"I would extend all-out cooperation to the contractors except entertaining any request to extend the project completion period," said power secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad.
PDB chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir conducted the function, at which British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Stephen Evans, South Korean Ambassador Cho Tai Young also spoke.
Meanwhile, in a separate move to augment electricity generation from existing plants a high-powered government committee recently recommended setting up another 100 mw power unit of Khulna Power Company Ltd (KPCL) on the existing plant premises.
The committee suggested running the KPCL's new plant for five years with a reduced tariff at Tk 7.60 per unit (1 kilowatt hour) from the current Tk 7.90 per unit.
The duration might be extended following consultation with the parties concerned.
The committee has already submitted its recommendation to the power ministry for approval.
