Experts praise PM's prudence

Mir Mostafizur Rahaman | January 07, 2019 00:00:00

Experts from different sectors hailed on Sunday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's prudence and dynamism in forming her council of ministers.

The cabinet division declared the names of 46 members for their induction into the new cabinet the same day.

Commenting on the cabinet, Policy Research Institute (PRI) chairman Dr Zaidi Sattar said the premier has taken a prudent step in bringing in new faces.

"I think former planning minister AHM Mostafa Kamal is a good choice as a finance minister as he is an experienced person," he told the FE.

"Similarly, new planning minister Prof Abdul Mannan and new commerce minister Tipu Munshi are also capable persons," he maintained.

But they have to prioritise the reform programmes chalked up to accelerate economic growth, the noted economist stated.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin also felt that this cabinet would be a dynamic one.

"We think the environment of doing business will be smoother with the management of ministers like new finance minister AHM Mostafa Kamal and new commerce minister Tipu Munshi."

"They're well aware of the challenges facing economy as well as businesses and will be able to take right steps to remove hurdles," said the apex trade body's chief.

"We also laud Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for inducting fresh faces and we hope they will succeed in attaining desired growth needed to fulfil Vision-2021" Mr Mohiuddin mentioned.

Meanwhile, political scientist Prof Dr Ataur Rahman said, "This is a welcome step. The PM has shown dynamism in forming the cabinet by injecting new faces."

"There are some experienced people also. So, this is a good combination," he told the FE.

"Many of the previous cabinet, who became controversial, have been dropped. This is also a prudent measure," Dr Rahman said.

But he pointed out that the success of the new cabinet would depend on how they address the challenges lying ahead of them.

"But if you ask me about my first impression, I would say this is a balanced cabinet," the political scientist added.

The new cabinet will be sworn in today (Monday).
