FBCCI asks traders for smooth supply chain

FE REPORT | February 29, 2024 00:00:00

The apex trade body on Wednesday urged the traders to stabilise supply chain and make a reasonable profit during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

It made the call during a meeting with retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers and importers of essential commodities ahead of the fasting month at the FBCCI Icon at Motijheel.

Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president Mahbubul Alam called upon the traders to ensure supply-chain stability and fair profits during the period in question.

He urged leaders of different market associations to be watchful against any attempts to manipulate prices through artificial crises.

Mr Alam stressed the need for a robust monitoring system to ensure consistency in product prices from wholesale to retail levels.

He warned of taking stern action against those found guilty of creating artificial shortages or engaging in manipulative practices.

"During Ramadan, business activities must continue responsibly. Just as in other countries, fair pricing and discounts should prevail during festive seasons. Profiteering at the expense of consumers won't be tolerated," he continued.

Mr Alam echoed the sentiment expressed by the commerce minister regarding market monitoring during Ramadan.

He advocated for the involvement of market committee leaders rather than law-enforcement agencies in overseeing price regulations.

FBCCI senior vice-president Md Amin Helaly said his organisation was not in favour of any dishonest businessman.

"Action will always be taken against those who create artificial crisis at their own will. The FBCCI will also monitor the market during Ramadan," he added.

Earlier, mill owners, wholesalers, retailers and other market associations assured that there would be no shortage of edible oil, sugar, pulses, gram, dates and other products during Ramadan.

FBCCI vice-president Md Khairul Huda Chopol, directors Mohammad Anwar Sadat Sarker and Md Munir Hossain, representatives of government institutions like Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, and National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection, also from corporate institutions, mill owners, retailers, wholesalers and retail business owners, business leaders and other dignitaries were present.
