Feb inflation up slightly due to turmoil

The point-to-point inflation rate last month (February) increased slightly to 6.14 per cent, as both the food and non-food inflations rose due to prevailing political unrest, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data showed.

According to BBS data, unveiled by Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday, the inflation growth rate on point-to-point basis in February slightly increased by 0.10 percentage points to 6.14 per cent from that of 6.04 per cent in January.

The rate of food inflation increased by 0.04 percentage points to 6.11 per cent in February, from 6.07 per cent in the previous month.

The non-food inflation rate also recorded a rising trend last month and reached 6.20 per cent, compared to 6.01 per cent recorded in January.

The planning minister said as people spent some extra money for their children's school admission, the consumer price index (CPI) rose slightly in February.

According to BBS data, the point-to-point inflation growth rate is in a comfortable level (7.05 per cent) since July of the current financial year (FY), 2014-15, as CPI has been showing almost a static trend.

The general CPI on the point-to-point basis in February increased to 210.74 from that of 210.12 in the previous month.
