Dr K A S Murshid, Director General, Bangladesh Institute of  Development Studies (BIDS), a public sector think-tank, has expressed his serious concern about the health of the country's financial sector.

"I think we are playing with fire", Murshid said, referring to the unhealthy developments taking place in the financial sector for quite some time, in an interview with the Financial Express (FE) recently.

"The health of the financial sector is very important for the economy. Unfortunately, the problems that have been created in the financial sector over many years are not being resolved. This is true for both private and public sector financial institutions. The government and also the Bangladesh Bank (BB) have failed to tackle adequately the underlying problems of cronyism in the sector. However, there is no valid justification for the ongoing state affairs to continue further", he said.

The current investment trend has also stirred up worries in Murshid because of low level of confidence among businesses despite relevant domestic and external factors remaining favourable.
