One person was killed and ten others injured in a devastating fire that broke out in a 12-storey commercial building at Malibagh in the city early Saturday, police said.
Fire Brigade sources said the fire originated from ICT Enterprise, a computer firm located at the ground floor of Shahjalal Commercial Complex, at about 3:15am from electric short circuit and soon spread to the other floors burning down valuables worth nearly Tk 1.0 million.
Officer-in-Charge of Ramna police station Shibli Noman told the FE that people were evacuated from inside the building as large plumes of smoke reached the fourth floor causing injury to at least 11 people.
The injured persons were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where one Saiful Islam (25) succumbed.
On information, five units of firefighters came to the spot and doused the flame after an hour-long battle with the help of locals as well as police personnel.
"Panic-stricken people started jumping down from the second and third floors thus hurting themselves," an official of the Fire Brigade said.
The firefighters could not say the exact reason behind the incident.
Meanwhile, valuables of eleven shops, including seven hut (garment waste) shops, were gutted in a blaze at Badda in the capital in the morning.
Five firefighting units from Baridhara and Tejgaon put out the blaze at about 1:15pm, which broke out at Khawaja Bazar of Santarkul from electric short circuit at about 11:25am.
Deputy Director Masudur Rahman of the Fire Brigade and Civil Defence coordinating the fire fighting work said that the extent of loss caused by the fire might reach Tk 0.7 million.
