Fire burns 800 shanties in city, one killed

A housewife was killed after being knocked down by a train when she was escaping from a devastating fire that broke out at Mogbazar Wireless slum in the city early Sunday gutting 800 shanties.
Fire Brigade sources said the fire originated from a cocking stove of the slum at about 4:49am and soon spread to the other houses that burnt down 800 shanties, including a garage, causing heavy loss to the slum residents.
During the blaze, several panicked slum inmates took shelter at the train track when an express train hit Aleya Begum (34), wife of a grocer Sultan, from behind leaving her fatally injured while others were managed to get down from the track safely.
The housewife was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where attending doctors confirmed her death.
On information, 16 units of the firefighters rushed to the spot and drenched the flame at about 9:00am after hours of frantic efforts with the help of local as well as policemen.
Fire service director general Abu Nayim Md Shahidullah told reporters that the fire spread very quickly across the shanties.
