CHITTAGONG, Dec 24: Several hundred shops in the Singapore-Bangkok Market in Chhotapole area near Halishahar police camp under Halishahar police station have been ravaged in a devastating fire in the city this evening.
Fire Service officials at Agrabad Fire Station said at least 10 fire fighting vehicles have brought the fire under control but smoke was still coming out from inside the one-storey market that has housed some 600 small shops.
They are yet to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire that originated from a slum nearby and spread to the adjacent market.
Most of the shops have been burnt fully, said Md Jewel, a local resident in the Chhotapole area over telephone.
Fire service officials said they were yet to receive full report of the incident as the fighters were engaged in pouring water from the nearby pond assisted by the local people.
Jewel told this correspondent at 8.30 pm that the fire was under control but he saw smoke coming out from inside the market.
