Ravages of Amphan

Fisheries, livestock loss at Tk 3.06b

FE REPORT | May 23, 2020 00:00:00

The cyclone Amphan has caused an estimated loss of about Tk 3.06 billion in the fisheries and livestock sectors in Barisal and Khulna divisions.

Of the two sectors, the fisheries sector has incurred losses worth over Tk 3.05 billion while the figure for the other sector is Tk 10.44 million, according to preliminary data of the fisheries and livestock ministry.

The powerful cyclone that slammed into the coastal region of the country on Wednesday ravaged a total of 24,350 fish farms and 50,138 cattle and poultry farms, the data showed.

The ministry sent a letter with the data to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Thursday.

In its letter, the fisheries ministry requested the disaster management ministry to provide cash assistance and interest-free loans on easy terms to marginal and commercial farmers and entrepreneurs on an emergency basis to help offset the damage.

The letter signed by Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud also said the final report on the loss and damage was being prepared and verified.

The letter also pointed out that investors in the fisheries and livestock sectors have already suffered heavy financial losses due to the coronavirus outbreak. And the cyclone Amphan has left them more frustrated.
